We saw this couple at a nearby table in a cruise ship bar. I took several photographs, from which this painting was developed. The chess pieces are positioned in the well know Fools Checkmate, with a reputation for quickly defeating the unwary.

Boys everywhere love digging in wet sand to building canals, castles, moats, or maybe a hole to the other side of the world. Together, they share their plans and ideas to remake the world.

Rainy Date

It has been raining; hard. Yet a lonely couple are enjoying time together over glasses of wine, in spite of the inclement weather. Perhaps, only in Florence, Italy, could this occur. In threatening weather, the curb side restaurant tables are protected by clear plastic tents with side screens. With coats off, the couple's comfort is helped by portable gas heaters. Are they on a first date? Or are they old friends happy to be together? No matter what it is like out there. You may be sure the café staff will look to their enjoyment.

As a large funeral procession came by, and the crowd started into the old church, the musicians arranged themselves beside the entrance. They began to play to the gathering mourners entering the church. We were painting in an open area near the church, when suddenly the funeral procession appeared. The coffin, was born by six burly men and perhaps contained someone of some local stature. For the procession was large and accompanied by a band of some fourteen Mariachi musicians. Each player was probably a local shopkeeper or worker from the small town, taking time off to honor the dead.
Variations of The Painter

This collage of different digital photographic variations of the famous self portrait of Ferdinand Hodler, famous Swiss painter of the early 20th century, stares at you as the painter used to stare at his models or the Lake Geneva landscape. The power of his eyes consumes your view, your mind and I hope you will stare back and enter into a close dialog with the man himself.
